Herbert was born the fourth son of Joseph Roswell and Jane Gates Tibbetts. The family moved to O'Brien County when he was very young, traveling in a covered wagon. Bert was 3 when his mother died and he went to live with a family named Deegan near Hartley where he attended school. About 1905 Bert loaded several box cars with horses, machinery and household goods and taking his brother HOrace age 5 with him moved to Hazelton, ND where they spent six years. Bert Married Olive Thompson. They were later divorced. Bert went to Oklahoma for about ten years where he helped build some of the first roads in Oklahoma and some of the first streets in Tulsa. He returned to the Harltey community where he married Lottie Deegan Lighter on January 6, 1926 at Spencer Iowa. They farmed south of Hartley until his retirement. Bert died at Hartley hospital at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 18 days.
