Sherman Gilland was the only child of Jasper Newton Gilland and Amelia J David. His parents were married on 28 Aug 1864 in Marshall County, Indiana. Sherman was born about nine months later, on 16 May 1865. Beginning in March, 1867, a series of legal notices were placed in The Plymouth Weekly Democrat by Amelia, suing her husband for desertion. She died in 1867, shortly after receiving her divorce, when Sherman was just one year old.

Upon his mother's death, he was sent to live with his maternal grandparents, Wesley P and Elizabeth (Newkirk) David in nearby Walnut. Grandfather Wesley David died 20 Feb 1869, shortly after Sherman's arrival. Grandmother Elizabeth remarried in 1874 to James C Morris, who was the grandfather of Sherman's second wife, Virda Mae Beckley. Ultimately, through Sherman and Virda both losing their mothers, and their grandparents both losing their spouses, Sherman and Verda met, were married, and raised seven children.

15 year old Sherman can be found in the household of grandparents James and Elizabeth in 1880, working as a farmer in Madison County, Indiana. The 1900 Census cites Sherman's occupation as a crane operator at the tin mills in Madison with his second wife, Virda, and four children.

Married twice, his first wife was Julia McPhearson, who died at the age of 29. They were married in 1886 and had one child, daughter Lavada Faye Gilland (1893-1973).

He had seven children with his second wife, Virda Mae Beckley (1876-1938), whom he married in Indiana in 1896. They moved to Hamilton County, Ohio in 1910, where he died in 1917. His obituary lists his age at death as 51 years, 10 months and 24 days. Cause of death was lobar pneumonia.
