Charles E. Lower, 81, of 34 Pine St., died Sunday at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Mr. Lower was a teacher at Phoenix, Pulaski and Oswego high schools for 35 years.

He was choir director and organist at Pulaski Congregational Church and organist at St. John's and St. Mary's churches in Oswego. Previously, he had been organist and choir director in the Catholic church at Amsterdam for many years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and Robert Edwards American Legion Post 358.

Born Aug. 4, 1922, in Oswego, son of George W. and Agnes Carney Lower, he graduated from Oswego High School and received bachelor's and master's degrees from Oswego State Teachers College.

He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

He married Eleanor M. Murtha on June 21, 1968. She died Aug. 23, 1998.

Surviving are a brother, George W. Jr., Michigan; a stepdaughter, Mary Ellen Miller, Pulaski; two stepsons, Robert A. Murtha Jr., Auburn, and Brian J. Murtha, Pulaski, 10 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will be in Pulaski Cemetery.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Foster-Hax Funeral Home.
