He worked as a steel fixer at Ellesmere Port. He joined the Merchant Navy in 1941 and served on S.S. Oporto (Liverpool). He was a donkeyman (someone in charge of the donkey-engine. This was a small steam engine that was used to propel the coal into the boilers of the main propulsion engines). The ship was sunk by enemy action. He died at sea, aged 36 years. He is commemorated here and also on the family grave in Overleigh New Cemetery, Chester, England. (MEMORIAL ID 204952903)
