Secretary of the Interior during the Presidential years of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mr Ickes was a strong supporter of civil rights. After President Roosevelt died, Harold Ickes did not get along with President Truman and he resigned from government in 1946 in protest over the appointment of Edwin W. Pauley, Under Secretary of the Navy. In his final years Ickes wrote a syndicated newspaper column and contributed regularly to the New Republic. Ickes wrote several books including Third Term Bugaboo, Not Guilty and his memoirs, The Autobiography of a Curmudgeon (1943). (bio by: Laurie)
