Sports Figure. He is considered Hungary's greatest soccer player and one of the finest half-backs in the sport's history. As a member of the Hungarian National Team, Bozsik won the gold medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, participated in Hungary's historic victory over England at Wembley in 1953, made it to the World Cup Finals against West Germany in 1954, and won the Central European Cup in 1959. During his 15-year career he played in 447 games, including 101 international appearances, and scored 33 goals. Bozsik was born in Kispest, a suburb of Budapest, and began playing soccer as a child. He made his professional debut in 1947. At his peak he was Hungary's most popular sports star, his handsome looks compensating for the lack of grace in his playing style. After his retirement in 1962, Bozsik briefly served as a member of Parliament and on the board of the Kispest soccer franchise. In 1974 he was named manager of the National Team but had to resign due to a heart ailment, the cause of his death at 52. Jozsef Bozsik Stadium in Budapest is named for him.
