He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1882 and from its Law School in 1887. After serving as City Treasurer of Sparta, Wisconsin, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1898 and went on to serve nine terms, from 1899 to 1921. Esch was then appointed to the Interstate Commerce Commission, serving from 1921 to 1928, the last two years as chairman. He then practiced law in Washington until he retired to La Crosse in 1938.
