Born Dean Carroll Jones, his father was a construction worker, young Dean experienced entertainment at an early age, as a singer on his own radio program in Alabama. He dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen and went to New Orleans in an attempt to further his singing career, however he would return to Alabama and complete his high school education. He served with the United States Naval Corps during the Korean War and during this period, he entertained troops. Following the war, he resumed his career as a vocalist, prior to being discovered by Hollywood.
