Civil War Union Officer. The Pennsylvania born Bell was a commissioned officer in the United States Army's 15th Regiment of Infantry. Enlisting on May 14, 1861 as a Captain, his "gallant and meritorious services" during the battle of Shiloh earned him the rank of Brevet Major. He was demonstrating the same leadership during the battle that ended his life - Stones River (Murfreesboro), Tennessee. For this similar "gallant and meritorious services", he was posthumously promoted to Brevet Lieutenant Colonel.
