Nancy Violet Sutherland was born May 6, 1880 at Colley, Virginia and departed this live on July 7, 1972, making her stay on earth 92 years, 2 months and one day.

She was the daughter of Noah Baldwin and Jane Colley Sutherland and was he last surviving child of twelve children. She married Prosper B Sutherland on December 10, 1896. And to this union were 14 children. Her husband and 6 children preceded her in death, four in infancy.

Left to mourn her passing are three daughters: Mrs Stewart Owens of Warren, Michigan; Mrs. Woodrow Sutherland and Mrs. Aubra Taylor, both of Haysi, VA: five sons Guy and Edd both of Roanoke, VA; Corbett of Hazel Park, Michigan; Farley of Pound, VA; and Ralph of Sanford, Florida; twenty-three grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.

Aunt Violet united with the Primitive Baptist Church and was baptized July, 1928, by Elder William B. Sutherland and was a faithful member of the Sulphur Spring Primitive Baptist Church for 44 years until recent failing health kept her from attending. She was the oldest member of the Sulphur Springs Primitive Baptist Church at the time of her passing. She loved her church and never missed a meeting in years past even when she had to walk before transportation was available. Her faith was strong and always carried her through her troubled times. She always told her family to have faith and the Lord would provide their needs. Her faith never faltered in 92 years.

She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother and was loved by all in the community. She always believed in visiting the sick and did as long as she was able.

She will be missed by her family, friends, and neighbors, but her memory and the love she gave to others throughout the years will stay with us forever.

Her spirit went to God who gave it but her old and worn body was laid to rest in a grave beside her husband and among her deceased descendants, there to await the happy morning of her resurrection. Our loss is heaven’s gain.

Written by a granddaughter, Andra Taylor Conley.

From the minutes of the one hundred sixty-first annual session of the Washington District Primitive Baptist Association held with New Garden Church, Russell County Sept 8, 9, 10, 1972. Added to the Nancy Violet Sutherland Find A Grave Memorial at the Noah B. Sutherland Cemetery June 15, 2016 by Edgar A. Rice.
