US Congressman. Educated in Quaker schools, he worked in his father's tool making business. He moved to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, and was an ironmaster for forty years. He later became the Borough of Conshohocken's justice of the peace, and first burgess. In 1859, along with William T. and Richard S.
