Barbara was the daughter of James Madison and Sarah A. (Langley) Caviness. She married Walter Lee Kivett in 1897 and they were the parents of ten children: Jerry Jackson, Connie Hazel, Romie Edgar, James Rezzie, Alma Rosa, Walter Lewis, Thomas Grady, David Theodore, Cecil Astor and John Calvin.
