Raymond Clay Mizell
(August 16, 1943 - August 20, 2015)

Raymond C. “Ray” Mizell, age 72, passed away August 20, 2015 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a valiant fight with cancer.

He was born August 16, 1943 and raised in Maryville, Tennessee. He loved to go to the beach and watch the morning sunrise over the ocean with his coffee, but had no desire to call any place other than Maryville home. He graduated from Maryville High School, retired from the Aluminum Company of America with 39 years of service and was a member of Dotson Memorial Baptist Church. He was a lifelong NASCAR race fan, but his first love of sports was golf and bowling. He was the fourth bowler to record a 700 series in Blount County.

Preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Ethel Mizell; granddaughter, Victoria Rose Mizell; brothers-in-law, Don Elkins, and Howard, Robert and Raymond Hobbs; and beloved boxer, Nitro.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Mizell; sons, Thomas (Cristal) Mizell and Shannon Lewis both of Maryville; granddaughters, Madison and Callie Mizell; sisters, Earline Elkins of Cookeville, Kay (Gerry) Bryan of Jacksonville, Florida, and Judy Mizell of Maryville; brother, Philip Mizell of Maryville; sisters-in-law, who had many projects and odd jobs that kept him busy after retirement, Nellie (Dewey) Sharp, Shirley (David) Pierce, Mary (Carl) McGill, Audrey Huckaby, Geraldine (James) Tipton, Clara Hobbs, Dora Hobbs, and Debbie Hobbs; several aunts, including June Radford of Maryville, and Louise Livesay of Marietta, Georgia; and too many nieces, nephews, and cousins to name but he loved every one of them. Also survived by special friends: his “bestest buddy in the whole world” Brittany Pedigo; his two little “green haired” buddies, Jessica and Devin Tolman and Cierra “Lucy Brown” Cutshaw; his two neighborhood buddies, Reid Damron and Shirley Acuff; and two lifelong friends, Doug Mincy and Dwight Murrell. He also shared a special relationship with the Otis Beaver family.

Special thanks go to his Hospice nurse, Penney.

In lieu of flowers, he asked that donations be made to the Blount County Animal Shelter, 233 Curie Ave Maryville, TN 37804. Funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM Saturday August 22, 2015 at Miller Funeral Home, Cedar Chapel, Rev. Brooky Gray and Rev. Keith Ross officiating. Interment will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday at Zion Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Saturday at Miller Funeral Home, Maryville. (865) 982-6041.
