Roman Catholic Saint. A physician by profession, Elian was a native of Homs. Refusing the renounce his Christian faith, he was martyred in the year 284 by his own father, an officer of the Roman Empire. Venerated for centuries among the Christians of Syria, a church was erected on the spot considered to be the location where he received his martyrdom. His remains were housed with veneration in a sarcophagus at the said edifice until they were sadly profanated and destroyed by the extremist militant group ISIS in August 2015, who through a sick video, diffused the destruction of the 1,600 year old worship place and adjacent monastery, both housing ancient and rare artefacts. The liturgical feast day of Saint Elian occurs on February 6. Another church dedicated to him is found in Brownsville, Pennsylvania.
