Robert Brodnax Glenn
Birth: Aug. 11, 1854
Eden
Rockingham County
North Carolina, USA
Death: May 16, 1920
Manitoba, Canada

North Carolina Governor. Upon graduation from Davidson College, he became a lawyer, and was soon elected to the state legislature. He later served as a district attorney and as North Carolina's US Attorney before becoming Governor in 1905. His term as Governor was noted for its positive response in 1906 after a white mob in Salisbury, North Carolina, lynched three black men. Though not considered a progressive on racial matters, Governor Glenn was outraged at the lack of respect for the law by the mob, and went to Salisbury to personally oversee the state's response. The mob ringleader was identified, tried and found guilty of murder, and sentenced to 15 years in prison, the first such conviction in North Carolina for the crime of a white man killing a black man. After leaving office in 1909 he was appointed to the International Joint Commission on Waterways. He died of a heart attack in Winnipeg, Canada, where he was attending meetings of the commission.  (bio by: Bill McKern)
