Governor of Nevada. He was born in Winston County, Mississippi to a family that specialized in buying land on the frontier then selling out and moving on as the area increased in population. They moved on through Arkansas and into Texas in 1857 where they began ranching. He joined the Texas Rangers at the beginning of the Civil War and his unit was responsible for protecting settlers from the Comanche Indians. After the war he was involved in large cattle drives working for other people and then in partnership with his brothers. He finally moved on to Nevada where he became quite well known through his cattle dealings. He first entered politics when he successfully ran for governor on the Silver-Democratic ticket in 1902. His bid for a Senate seat in 1904 was unsuccessful, but he won a second term as governor in 1906. During his administration a state railroad commission was formed; the Nevada state police was organized; an eight-hour work day bill for miners was passed; and a state engineering office was created. He passed away while he was still in his second term. (bio by: Tom Todd)
