Mr. and Mrs. Freeman owned and operated Simcox-Freeman Grocery Store in northeast Kansas City, MO., until 1948. They were divorced in 1958.
She was married to Alva Messmer on June 17, 1971, in Merriam and they lived in Kansas City, KS. He died in 1977.
Mrs. Messmer worked in retail sales at Kay's, a women's clothing store in Kansas City, KS. After moving to Osawatomie in 1977, she worked at Coach Light, a women's clothing store owned by her daughter.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and its Presbyterian Women, both in Osawatomie. She was also a member of Business and Professional Women.
Others preceding her in death were a brother, Charles R. Russell, and a sister, Ethel Mountain.
Survivors include her daughter Joyce Ann Schrader of Osawatomie; her son, Gerald A. Freeman of DeLand, FLa.; a brother Robert Russell of Overland Park; a sister, Charlene Doehler of Granbury, Texas; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were today (Monday) at Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home in Osawatomie. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.
