U.S. Congressman. After completing a college preparatory education he took over from his father management of the family estate and business holdings. He was a New York State Senator from 1878 to 1881. He then won an election as State Comptroller and served from 1881 to 1883. After losing the comptroller's race in 1883, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1884 and held his seat for two terms. In 1885 he was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for governor. After leaving the House in 1889 he managed his family's business ventures until his retirement. Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital in Bath, New York, is named for him.
