He successfully operated Cortlandt Manor as a farm, brewery and manufacturing enterprise. He served in the military briefly during the Revolution. In 1777, he was head of the Kingston convention that adopted New York's constitution. A friend of Governor George Clinton, Van Cortlandt served as New York's first Lieutenant Governor, holding office from 1778 to 1795 and often acting as governor when Clinton was coordinating military efforts against the British. After leaving office he continued the operation of Cortlandt Manor. He was originally interred there, and was later reburied. Sons Philip and Pierre Jr. both served in US House. The town of Cortlandt and Cortland County are named for him.
