July 17 July, 1930 -Arlington Review-Herald

Gladys Maria Henrietta Echtenkamp was born Apr 12, 1911; baptized April 30 the same year, and was confirmed in her Christian faith after attending St. Paul's Lutheran School.

On April 13, 1921, Gladys lost her dear mother through death when only eight years old; three years later her father, and over a year ago, her only sister. Since the death of her mother, she had lived with her aunt, Mrs. Henrietta Schmidt, northeast of Arlington.

After passing the eighth grade in St Paul's Lutheran School, she attended Arlington High School and was graduated from there with high honors in 1928. During her high school years she was one of the most popular young ladies. Her sweet voice made her the center of all musical activities, and dramatic activities. During the last two years she was a student at the American Business College, and only the last few months had found employment as a stenographer.

A week ago last Saturday she was suddenly taken ill, and was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital where she underwent an operation for appendicitis. Last Saturday another operation was performed, but she failed to rally, passing away Sunday morning at nine o'clock, at the age of 19 years, 3 months, and 1 day. She leaves to mourn her loss, twelve uncles, fourteen aunts, one brother-in-law, the only distant relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., her pastor, Rev. - W. Wolter, officiating, speaking on her confirmation verse, Luke 10:42 "But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her". Interment was made in St. Paul's cemetery.
