Birth: May 23, 1795
Death: May 12, 1860

Architect, English Civil Engineer, Contrusted Tower Bridge, Designer of Trafalgar Square in London. Sir Charles Barry was born in London. At the age of 15, he apprenticed to a London surveyor and travel throughout Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and Syria, studying buildings and making architectural drawings. Upon returning to England, he began designing churches for the Church Commissioners, concentrating his efforts in Gothic and Greek styles. Skilled in a variety of designs styles, he began building churches in London, Brighton, and Manchester and soon became a leading figure in the mid-Victorian architectural style, known as Anglo-Italian. After a fire in 1834 destroyed much of the old Palace of Westminster, a public competition was held and Barry was chosen over 95 other architects to rebuild the ruins of the Palace. He skillfully incorporated the old surviving parts of the medieval Palace into the overall design of the new buildings. A leader in the industry, he was elected President of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1896, knighted in 1897, and served on several Royal Commissons.
