Martha Sarah (Bates) Marsh stated on the 1850 Census (Concord Township, Delaware County, OH) that she was born in Massachusetts. But sometime prior to 1790, she had moved with her parents to the town of Chemung, Montgomery County (now Chemung County), New York. Martha can be found there on the 1790 Census at about the age of 18 and newly married to Benjamin Marsh (also buried at Hill Cemetery). There were several Bates families living in Montgomery County at the time and one of those families most likely included Martha's parents. By 1800 Martha & Benjamin had moved some 30 miles to the town of Ulysses, New York, and can be found on the 1800 Census for Ulysses, Cayuga County (now Tomkins County), New York. Three of Martha & Benjamin's eventual ten children had been born by then and also appeared (as marks) on the 1800 Census: Josiah H. Marsh, Joel Marsh (also buried at Hill Cemetery), and Esther Marsh (also buried at Hill Cemetery). The subsequent seven children were: Benjamin Marsh Jr. (also buried at Hill Cemetery), Clarinda Marsh, John Marsh, Lucinda Marsh, Martha Marsh, Sarah Marsh, & William Marsh. Martha and Benjamin reappeared in the census data in 1840 - living "next door" to the family of their son, Josiah H. Marsh, in Concord Township, Delaware County, Ohio. Benjamin died in 1845, but Martha appeared in the census data one final time (1850 Census) before her death in 1853. She was then 81 years of age and listed as "head-of-household" in Concord Township, Delaware County, Ohio, living "next door" to the family of her daughter, Esther (Marsh) Hill.
