MIAMI, Okla. - George J. ``Buck'' Captain, 74, Miami route 4, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday, May 19, 1997, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo., after an illness. Mr. Captain was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Ottawa County and had lived in the Miami area most of his life. He served in the Air Force for 30 years and flew more than 20 missions during World War II. He was a member of Southeast Baptist Church, Commerce, the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite at Denver, Colo., and the Scottish Rite at Tulsa. He was a graduate of Miami High School. He served in the Secret Service Intelligence Dept. in the military and was president of the Intertribal Council of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe., which he was chief of for 18 years. He was head of the Ottawa County Nutrition Program. He married Betty Cole on Nov. 17, 1945, at Baxter Springs, Kan. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, George J. Captain IV, Midland, Ga., and Nelis Captain, Miami; three brothers, Leo Captain, Charley Captain and Dennis Captain, all of Miami; three sisters, Thelma Sullivan, Peoria, Sue Kropp, Quapaw, and Virginia Hart, state of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren and a great grandchild. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Southeast Baptist Church, Commerce, with the Rev. Jerry Von Moss officiating. Burial will be in Glenn Abbey Memorial Garden Cemetery, Miami. Pallbearers will be the Grand Lake Good Sam's Club.
