| Birth: | Oct. 22, 1837 Maineville Warren County Ohio, USA | | Death: | Jan. 16, 1898 Georgia, USA |  US Congressman. Representative from Ohio's 1st Congressional District. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1879 to 1883 and from 1885 to 1891. He was a member of the Ohio State Senate from 1874 to 1875 and served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1880. He was appointed commissioner of the Northern Pacific Railway by President Chester A. Arthur in 1883 and also served as a Regent for the Smithsonian Institute. His last federal appointment was as Commissioner of Patents from 1896 until his death two years later. He died in Thomasville, Georgia at the age of 60. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
