Statesman. A native of Paco, Manila, he served as the Vice President of the Philippines under President Corazon Aquino, from 1986 to 1992. The son of President Jose P. Laurel, he also served as a Senator from the Philippines from 1967 to 1972, Assemblyman for Region IV from 1978 to 1983, Prime Minister of the Philippines in 1986, and Minster of Foreign Affairs. Educated first in Manila in medicine, he later went to the United States and studied to become a lawyer at Yale University. He received his Master's Degree in 1953, and his Doctor of Juridicial Science from there in 1960. He later married and became interested in politics. Named the most outstanding senator for 1968 to 1971, Laurel wrote the "Justice of The Poor" or "Laurel Laws", which helped the Government Reorganization Act, and the amendment to the Land Reform. He also helped found the United Nationalists Democratic Party or UNIDO. From 1996 to 1999, he served as Chairman of the Philippine National Centennial Commission, but the commission was later abolished. Laurel was later charged with corruption for misuse of funds for construction of the P1.165-billion Centennial Expo in Clarkfield, Angeles City, Pampagna, and brought before the the Anti-graft court. Following his trial, he returned to private life. He retired to the United States, and died in Atherton, California, from lymphoma, at the age of 75. He was cremated and his ashes were returned to the Philippines for burial. (bio by: K)
