Elijah MOORE, after being raised on his father's 600 acre tobacco farm in Stokes County, North Carolina, Elijah enrolled in Franklin College (now the University of Georgia) between 1825 and 1827. Elijah graduated with an AB Degree in either 1832 or 1833. Elijah's first wife was Barbara Jane CHEATHAM BARBER, a widow with one son, George Thomas BARBER.
After Elijah and Barbara Jane CHEATHAM lost their infant daughter, Sara Ann Caroline MOORE, in 1838 they moved the family to Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, the County Seat.
