May 11, 1876:
Last Monday, Jesse Kennedy, a well-to-do farmer, of Middle township, went to Pittsboro to have some smithing done, and as was his custom of late, became intoxicated, and upon his return home in attempting to dismount, he fell, and his foot hung in the stirrup, the horse took fright and ran, dragging him quite a distance, and cutting his head in two, so that he died instantly
. He was the owner of a nice farm, was much respected, seemed to be getting along well, and but for this unfortunate habit, one that never fails to work the ruin and death of its victim, and to bring sorrow, want and shame to all connected, he might have been alive, the joy and comfort of his family and friends.
He was about thirty and leaves a wife and four children. Can there be a stronger temperance lecture than this disaster conveys?
