Thomas Edward Norris was born to James Bramwell Norris and Charlotte Matilda Birkett Norris in Liverpool, England on 20 March, 1890, the 8th of 9 children. His family had been watchmakers and mariners for several generations. He chose the latter profession, seeing the world from merchant vessels. He joined the British army at the outbreak of hostilities during World War I and was one of the earliest members of the RAF. He sustained serious injuries in the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
In 1920 Thomas left England on the S.S. Haverford, arriving in Philadelphia. He came directly to San Francisco where he met and married Kathleen Beatrice Berkeley in 1923. They had three boys: James Berkeley Norris, Francisco Birkett Norris and David Oldham Norris.
Thomas never fully recovered from the injuries he sustained during the Great War. During the depression he was able to find work in the shipping department of a store in San Francisco. The work was very physically demanding and he suffered a series of heart attacks during the summer of 1937, finally succumbing in September of that year at the young age of 47.
His love and dedication to his family was evident in the letters he wrote to his boys over the summer of '37 while he was away from home. He took a keen interest in their lives and expressed his love for them and pride in their accomplishments. He died years before his first grandchild was born but they still feel a connection to this kind and gentle man through his photos and sweet letters.
