Charles Scribner was born in New York City, New York. He was the son of Uriah Rogers and Betsey Hawley. He graduated from the Princeton University in the class of 1840 and after graduation he joined in a partnership with Isaac Baker to form a new kind of publishing house. This new breed of publishing company would exist purely as a publisher. He gained control of the company in 1850 with the death of Baker, renaming it Charles Scribner and Company and eventually Charles Scribner's Sons.

In 1865 the company made its first venture into magazine publishing with "Hours at Home". The firm published Scribner's Magazine for many years and is well known for publishing Hemingway.

Scribner married Emma L. Blair in 1846. He died of typhoid in 1871 while traveling in Lucerne, Switzerland.
