Henrietta Churchill, 2nd Duchess of Marlborough and Countess of Godolphin was the daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. She married Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin on April 23, 1698. He was the son of Sidney Godolphin, 1st Earl of Godolphin and Margaret Blagge.
The couple had five children; Harry, Lady Margaret, Lady Henrietta, William Godolphin, Marquess of Blandford, and Lady Mary. Henrietta succeeded to her father's titles suo jure when he died in 1722 and thus became Duchess of Marlborough, Countess of Marlborough, Marchioness of Blandford and Baroness Churchill of Sandridge. Her titles passed to her nephew, Charles Spencer, 4th Earl of Sunderland.
In 1722, after the death of the Duke of Marlborough, when Henrietta Godolphin became Duchess in her own right, her mother, Sarah, referred to her as Congreve's "moll". Henrietta and Congreve retired to Bath together, and there, after twenty years in 1723, her Grace produced a child, Mary.
Dramatist and playwriter William Congreve left the bulk of his fortune to Henrietta. She erected a monument in Westminster Abbey and wrote the epitaph. She had an ivory statue of Congreve made that moved by clockwork and had it set daily at her table where she talked with it as if it were alive.
