Memphis was the third child born to Joseph James Burton and Rosa (Kemplin). His older siblings were Alde and Flora, his younger siblings were Nevel, John, Melford, Jesse, Harrison and Anna. Through his father Memphis had several older half siblings, Jennie Luella, Beckie, Lottie and Samuel.

Memphis finished grammar school and was attending school at age 12. At age 22 was working and living at the house of Carl and Blanch Applegate.

Memphis was drafted into service in the US Army during WWII, he entered as a Private and left as Sergeant, his job is listed as Squad Leader. He left from Ft. Thomas in Newport, Kentucky. It appears that he served overseas and returned via passenger ship to Reception Station No. 6 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. His civilian occupation was listed under the header of semiskilled welders and flame cutters.

An obituary was published in the Lexington Herald-Leader on January 24, 1985.
