I knew Sophie was going to be a special cat from the first moment I saw her in the window at the Humane Society. Other cats ignored me, of course some wanted to play but Sophie just reached out her paw to me with a kind of "What's up?" sort of attitude. Within 1 minute of holding her for the first time she was purring and when I held her out in front of me to get a really good look, she didn't try to jump, she didn't squirm, she just laid there in my palm and looked around like she was enjoying the view. At that I moment I knew that I didn't have to look at any other cats, I had found the one. I think we bonded right then and there.

Sophie was supposed to be a family cat and I tried to treat her that way, I really did but she was my cat and I was her human and I don't think anyone in the family would argue that. She loved to watch me work. I think she was fascinated by watching me move around but when I slowed down she was always nearby then to just to keep an eye on me. For a long time I would wake up in the morning with her sleeping right on my chest.

Sophie was also a very sociable cat. She loved people and her best buddy in the house was my dog Casey. They spent many hours licking and grooming each other. It would have been a friendship for the ages if it hadn't been for my other dog Rosie who couldn't stand the idea of anyone getting attention but her. When Rosie saw the two getting chummy Rosie saw it as her mission to break things up. Rosie was OK with Sophie by herself but I don't think Sophie ever really trusted Rosie either.

Sophie died young and probably from cancer. She started losing weight about a year ago so we took her to the doctor and she was put on thyroid medication. She stopped losing the weight but even though she was allowed to eat as often as she wanted she just never seemed to be able to put the weight back on. Concerned about that I finally took her in again to the vet. Sophie was always her usual self and she was that day too but the doctor came back with blood test results that indicated she was not well. We decided to start some steroids (which she did not like) and hope for the best. Two days later she was acting like she wasn't feeling well. She climbed up on my desk and sat right in front of me and put her paw on my hand, and left it there. I talked to her and scratched her and each time I put my hand down on my computer mouse, she put her paw right back.

The next morning I sat at my desk for a few minutes. Sophie again came to me and jumped up on my desk. I held her for a few minutes while checking e-mail and as usual she was purring as loudly as ever. I then put her back on the desk. I should have paid more attention then but as I think about it now she was letting me know something wasn't right. I had to go to work so I told her to be a good girl and stay out of trouble and then left. About 4 hours later my wife called to say that Sophie was gone.

Sophie was the mellowest and most loving cat I have ever known. There was not a skittish or psycho bone in her body. She loved attention and got plenty of it and she will forever be missed because of it.

RIP Sophie
