William N. A. Norton fought in the Civil War, according to his granddaughter,the late Dovie Norton Stark. When discharged, he returned to Texas to find that his wife and family had died. He went back to Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC, and married Dovie A. Milholen, 7 Jul 1865 and brought her to Texas.
William was married three times after his return from the war, to Dovie A Milhollen, to Mary Elizabeth Murphy, and to Eva Casel. He was the father of Mary Jane Jennie Norton (1866-1941), Unknown Norton (1867-1867), Ann Elizabeth Norton (1870-1871), Dovie Ficklin Norton (1872-1960), William P P Norton (1874-1957), Harry Lindsay Norton (1876-1950), Emma Augusta Norton (1878-1878), Gus Grove Norton (1885-1949), Carrie A Norton (1886-1953).
William Nicholas was superintendent of a stage coach line between Austin, Texas and Silver City, New Mexico during Indian times. His daughter Dovie made the trip herself as a young child. She passed on stories to her children of the Indian raids she actually experienced on that long stage coach ride.
