C. F. Dykes Is Gone

Johnston County was saddened in the death of C. F. Dykes, who died at his home June 8, 1923, in the morning hours. His absence leaves a great vacancy in the numerous endeavors, of which it was his pleasure and the benefit to mankind.

C. F. Dykes was born Jan. 29, 1844, and was 79 years and 7 months of age at death, which was due, largely, to advanced age. One of the pioneers of Johnston county, his generous gifts of time, talent and funds to all worthy enterprises will ever be a monument to his residence among us. For twenty years Tishomingo was his home and his achievements here have benefited every interest. Thirty-seven years of his life have been closely identified with the Baptist Church, of which he was Senior Deacon for many years and an active Sunday School worker and teacher.

A Mason for 56 years, is the record of this citizen, who has been a tower of strength to his lodge and brethren. He practiced Masonry in his daily intercourses and preached the Masonry, which meant so much to him and his townspeople.

Services were held by his pastor Rev. Leon Julius, assisted by Rev. French of the local Presbytery, at the Baptist Church at 3 p.m Saturday. In eloquent words his deeds of mercy were touched on by his pastor and former pastor, Rev. C. H Holland. Interment was made in the City Cemetery, the Tishomingo A.F. & A.M. having charge after the church services. The impressive rites of the Masonic body was directed by Dr. Kniseley, Master of the lodge and about 40 brother Masons.

Deceased is survived by his widow and six children, three of whom are boys and three girls.

The Capital-Democrat mourns with the grieving family and friends in the loss of this noble father and citizen.
