He was a coach in the National Hockey League for six seasons (Calgary Flames 1982 to 1987 and Pittsburgh Penguins 1990 to 1991). He guided the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup title in 1991. Prior to coaching in the NHL, Johnson was the coach of the 1976 US Olympic hockey team. He was inducted into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992 and the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. His career coaching record in 480 games is 234 wins, 188 losses and 58 ties. He died from a brain tumor five months after celebrating the Stanley Cup victory. (bio by: C.S.)
