Catharine Baum, daughter of John Baum, was born March 5, 1807, at Meadville, Pennsylvania. Sometime before 1820, the Baums moved to Stark County, Ohio. Circa 1829 John Baum and his family moved on to St. Joseph County, in the Territory of Michigan, and it was there on May 3, 1830, Catharine married Lewis P. Comer, a farmer and minister in the Christian Church. In 1835 Lewis acquired a land grant and they moved to the newly forming county of Porter in Indiana. Lewis and Catharine Comer had six children (in birth order): Rebecca married Caleb Luther and moved to the West; Samuel married Nancy A. Bryarly and died in the Civil War; Josephus married Harriet A. Marine; Henrietta married Jacob Fisher; Henrietta's twin, William Henry married Alice King and moved to Franklin County, Kansas; and Cytheria G. married Heber Stoddard.
After Lewis died in 1876, Catharine continued to live an active life in Porter County for many more years. The local newspaper once reported that she had walked five and a half miles to see her daughter, and remarked, "How is that for a lady 76 years old." In her last years, Catharine lived part of the time with her daughter, Cytheria Stoddard, and part of the time with her daughter, Henrietta Fisher. She was in the Fisher home when she died at the age 87 on Aug. 18, 1894.
Part of her obituary said: "The home church at Morgan Prairie found her ever faithful, and after Brother Comer ceased from his ministry, her labor, her prayers, her money and influence were still consecrated to the church he loved so well. To the last she went about doing good, full of faith and good works, and her cheerful presence will be missed by her many friends and relatives."
