Betty Lou (Covalt) Holmgren, died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on June 16, 2006.
Betty was a high school business teacher for over 40 years, beginning her career in Gas City and retiring from Griffith High School in 1989. While at Griffith High School she served as president of the teacher's union and led their only strike. Since her parents' death, she has managed the family farm in Grant County. Among her favorite things were her great grandsons, IU Basketball, and the Chicago Cubs (She was always an optimist). Betty played a great bridge game. You could always find her holding court on the most recent ball game or sharing her political theories or life philosophies. She was a dear mother and friend to many, and had a tremendous impact on the lives of nearly 50, 000 students.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Collier and Fredna (Hans vander Genugten) Holmgren; granddaughters Katie (Michael) Collier Garvey, Naima Gardner and great grandsons Casey and Bennett Garvey.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred Covalt and Grace (Romack) Covalt; two brothers, James and Jarret Covalt.
