Author. He was born in Barnstable, England. He is best known for his book "The Beggar's Opera." Also he wrote "Trivia, or the Art of Walking the Streets of London," "Polly," "Rural Sports," "The Shepherd's Week" and "Fifty-one Fables in Verse." His epitaph in the tomb is by Pope, and is followed by Gay's own mocking couplet: "Life is a Jest, and All Things Show it, I Thought So Once, and Now I Know it." (bio by: José L Bernabé Tronchoni)
