Alexander Doniphan "Donnie" Pence

Outlaw, Member of the James Gang, and Sheriff. During the civil war, he rode with William C. Quantrill. He was in Samuels Depot kentucky when Quantrill was killed. On July 26, 1865, his brother Bud along with Frank James surrended to Union troops in Samuels Depot. He and Jesse James avoided capture. In 1866, he and his brother Bud fled to Kentucky after being identified as the robbers of the Liberty, Missouri bank at 2:00 pm on Feburary 13,1866. This became one of the nation's first successful daylight bank robberies during peacetime. From 1871 to 1896, he was sheriff of Nelson County, Kentucky. He died of typhoid. (bio by: Tom Denardo)
