W.C. Roberts one of Rogers best known citizens who for several years was postmaster here, died at his home on West Walnut street at 5 A.M. Thursday after having been in poor health several months.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday at Central Methodist Church wit the pastor, the Rev. J. A. Womack, Officiating. Arrangements are in charge of J. W. Bryant. Mr. Roberts who observed his 80th. birthday last May 8, was born in Fayetteville, May 8, 1850. He enlisted in company K. First Arkansas volunteer infantry during the civil war and served under Colonel J. M. Jackson in the union army while his father and 2 brothers served with confederate troops. He was a graduate of the Albany, N. Y. Law School and served for 4 years as a deputy sheriff under Jacob Yoes and was subsequently deputy co. clerk of Washington county under George W.M. Reed. Later he became associated with his uncle, Judge Lafayette Gregg in the practice of law. From 1880 until 1884 he was deputy collector of internal revenue and represented Madison County in the state legislature from 1893 to 1897. He was postmaster at Rogers during the administrations of presidents Roosevelt & Taft. In 1896 Mr. Roberts was elected department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and later was elected Judge Advocate General. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows fraternities in Rogers. Mr. Roberts was well known throughout tis section of the state and leaves 4 children Virgil N. Roberts, Miss Ethel Roberts And Mrs. Minnie Cowling of Rogers, and Charles F. Roberts of Little Rock. ( Rogers Daily News 10/9/30)
