Hays -- Ralph Joseph "Blackie" Augustine Sr., 72, died Jan. 6, 2004, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born April 2, 1931, at Hays, the son of Joseph and Cunnigunda Korbe Augustine.

He was a lieutenant with the Hays Police Department and an electrician. He retired in 1982. He belonged to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and was a member of the Hays Fire Department, both at Hays.

On Oct. 4, 1949, he married Rosella "Rose" Rupp at Hays. She survives.

Other survivors include: three sons, Ralph Jr., Greg and Bruce, all of Hays; one daughter, Linda Jensen, Hays; four brothers, Marvin, Robert, and Lavern, all of Hays, and Francis, Salina; three sisters, Mary Ann Whittaker, Quinter; Josephine Urban, Ellis; Norma Weigel, Hays; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alfred; and a sister, Lucille Younger.

Vigil service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Cline's Mortuary of Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, Hays. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.
