Grant County Newspaper, Marion, Indiana,
Sep 15, 1926:
Tazwell Shoemaker was a son of Basil and Elizabeth Shoemaker, he was born near Upland, Ind. January 12th., 1847, and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Peelle, near Upland, September 15th, 1926, at the age of 79 years, six months and 28 days. The deceased was one of six children, all of which have preceeded him to the grave; except one, Mrs. Emily Fanning, of Upland. In his early manhood he was united in marriage to Florence Elizabeth Crosley, to which union were born two children, Clifford V. Shoemaker of Gulfport, Miss., and Mrs. Eva L. Peelle of Upland, Ind. He also leaves two grandchildren, Bobby Vernon and Florence Jean Shoemaker, of whom he was very fond. Fifteen years ago his companion died, and since then he has spent a part of his winters with his son in Mississippi, but for the most part of the past twelve years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Peelle, who with her husband found their highest satisfaction in making his declining days peaceful and comfortable.
Mr. Shoemaker's father was one of the earliest settlers of the country and he has seen the community rise from almost a wilderness to its present prosperous condition. He was a member of the [J..] O. U. A. M. Lodge, and the K. P.'s. He was a member of the Friends church for many years, but for some time he has attended services at the Jefferson church, where he was caretaker of the cemetery for more than nine years. During the last two years of his life he developed more in the Christian life and became a marvel of patience and gentleness. We have visited many sick people but have visited few with the patience of Mr. Shoemaker, with whom we prayed many times. He was very appreciative of all that was done for him and especially of the care given him by his son and also his daughter. On our last visit with him Mr. Shoemaker seemed to realize that his end was nigh and requested that we officiate at the services, and he also expressed his confidence in God and Jesus his savior. During his nine year service as care-taker of the cemetery which will now claim his body, he kept it like a garden of flowers and if every one to whom he was kind could bestow one flower his body would rest beneath a wilderness of them.
