Frederick Cushman was born on July 7, 1758 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut. He was the son of Charles Cushman. In 1771, he, in company with his parents, moved to Bennington, Bennington County, Vermont.

In 1775, Frederick volunteered and served under Colonel Samuel Herrick in a raid against a group of Tories who had collected under the command of Sir John Johnson at a Fort in Johnstown, New York. In the spring of 1776, Frederick enlisted for about six months in a Connecticut Company under the command of Captain Couch, which was then marching through Bennington. He proceeded with that Company to Skenesborough, Charlotte County (now Whitehall, Washington County) New York. At Skenesborough he was employed in building boats till he was taken sick and permitted to return home.

On July 28, 1777, Frederick enlisted in Captain John Warner's Company, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Herrick's Vermont Regiment of Rangers which fought in the Battle of Bennington, August 1777. Frederick served in Warner's Company until that unit was mustered out, December 3, 1777. In March 1778, Frederick enlisted in Captain Isaac Clark's Company, Colonel Samuel Herrick's Regiment of Rangers then being raised and rendezvoused at "Meshowby" (now Brandon), Rutland County, Vermont for Major General De la Fayette's secret incursion into Canada. When that mission was aborted, Clark's Company remained in service for about 2 months defending the Vermont frontiers and scouting on the shores of Otter Creek and Lake Champlain. Soon thereafter, Frederick moved to Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont. In the later part of 1778, 1779, 1780 and 1781, Frederick served in a number of Rutland Militia Companies and Detachments responding to various alarms. Frederick married Alice Caswell.

In 1793, Frederick moved to Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont. In November 7, 1793, he was one of the organizing members of The Georgia Congregational Church located at Georgia Center. Frederick resided in Georgia until his death, October 22, 1852.
