He married Susannah Morrison Porter October 21, 1866 in Burkettville, MS, daughter of Archibald Porter and Annie Traweek. She was born September 14, 1841, and died August 14, 1908 in Kosciusko, at home.

The book "Oh! For Dixie" is about his Civil War career.

His epitaph:

An amiable father lies here at rest,
As God ever with his image blest.
