He was the eldest of three children born to William Eppy Hawkins and Lily Daisy Williams. He married Gladys Pearl Boren on August 7, 1926 in St. Clair county Missouri. Attended school in Oklahoma, eventually working for the Santa Fe Railroad as a manager in Wichita Kansas. He was accepted to West Point Military Academy but failed the physical due to a heart condition brought on from having Rheumatic fever when he was a kid. He did end up joining the army serving in the 1920's. He died from a massive heart attack suffered at home. He had 2 sons, William Richard who lived 17 days and Paul Gene, and 2 grandchildren Timothy Hawkins and Jana Hawkins Comyford.
