Dorothy was born September 25, 1922 at Portland, Oregon to Evelyn Ann Van der Ven Preston and Jerome Preston.
Dorothy married her high school sweetheart Lowell “Bud” Whitten February 1942. Bud was serving in the Army at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Their daughter Alice Marie was born just before he shipped out for the South Pacific and WW II. While he served four years overseas she worked at the Vancouver Barracks in the cleaning department, taking their daughter to work with her.
The family settled in Portland, Oregon where Dorothy was a housewife. She enjoyed gardening and was a professional seamstress maintaining a home business. She was active in activities with their daughter mainly Camp Fire Girls. Dorothy sewed most of her daughters’ clothes including sweaters and ballet costumes. She enjoyed fishing and hunting and camping. Dorothy had an extensive cookbook collection and was a fantastic cook and baker.
After Bud died she later married William Rudolph of Poulsbo, Washington and settled in to being a full time homemaker. Together they traveled to Fiji, China, Europe, Thailand and the United States. They maintained a half acre of Roses in front of their home and she was always pleased when people would stop to take pictures.
Dorothy enjoyed her grandchildren and the many foster children that her daughter’s family cared for. The children were always welcome to enjoy time with Grandma and splash in the pool. She saw that the children went on vacation every summer usually to the ocean to enjoy the beach.
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, elder sister Annette, and her husband’s Bud and Bill.
She leaves her daughter Alice Marie (Bert) Johnson of Ririe, Grandsons, Michael and Eric Johnson of Ririe, and Dusty (Leah) Johnson of Idaho Falls. The family also maintains a close relationship with a foster daughter, Viki (Gary) Crays of Beaverton, Oregon. Her surviving sister, Pat Milleson lives at Poulsbo, Washington.
Dorothy will be missed but continually loved by her family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 6:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2015 at The Ririe-Shelton Cemetery, with Bishop Jason Peterson conducting. Services are under the care of Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.eckersellfuneralhome.com
