Birth: Jun. 29, 1886, Germany
Death: Jun., 1963
Illinois, USA

Leo Zedrow Sr. is the son of
John Zodrow Sr. and
his wife Agnes Mielke.
---
Leo was born in
Lebehnke, West Prussia
(East Germany).
---
Leo immigrated to the U.S.
from the port of Bremen, Germany,
on June 29, 1887, at Baltimore,
Baltimore County Maryland,
with his parents and his three
older siblings, and settled
at 15 Main St. in
Naperville, DuPage County Illinois.
They came on a ship named "Weser".
Leo was listed as 11 months of age
at the time.
---
These immigration records, may be
viewed (on microfilm), in the
genealogical section of the
Allen County Pubic Library,
in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
-----------------------
Note: "Naperville Heritage Society,
Library/Archives Collections,
Collection # 19",
has records concerning
Lots 8, 9, and 12, in Block eleven,
of the original town of Naperville,
in Section 13; a warranty deed for
John Zodrow [Sr.] in 1887, and 1898
(the Zodrow family settled in
Naperville in 1887).
Also for John Zedrow and Leo Zedrow
(concerning this same property),
in 1953, and 1986,
(pages 4 and 5). Google it.
---
A "John Zedrow" was named as a
Commissioner for the city of
Naperville, in 1967, 1969, and
part of 1971 (two year terms).
--------------------------------------
Note: Leo is listed as "Zodrow" on
his W W II draft registration card, and
as "Zedrow" on his Social Security card
(issued through the Railroad Board).
---
The German spelling of the name was "Zodrow".
Leo Sr. (along with his wife and children),
later changed it to the American
spelling of "Zedrow".
-----
Note:
Many families from Germany, later
switched to the English spelling
of their name, especially when the
United States went to war against
Germany in 1941-42, the beginning
of World War II,
as they then wanted to appear as
Americans, and not as Germans
(for fear of retaliation).
---
Leo's parents, and his brother John Jr.
had already passed away "before"
World War II broke out, and his sisters
were already married and using their
married names, so Leo [Sr.] and his
wife Martha, and children John and
Leo Jr., were the only family members
left to change the spelling of their name.
--------------------------------
Leo "Zodrow" was married to
Martha Kowalski, on Dec. 27, 1921.
---
They lived in Naperville, DuPage
County Illinois, in the 1930 and
1940 census'.
---
Leo and Martha had two children:
---
1. John W. Zodrow, then Zedrow.
