Final rites were conducted at the Rockton Methodist church Tuesday afternoon for Victor Ellis, 32-year-old Rockton resident, who died Friday night of injuries received when the race car he was driving overturned on the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, track. The Rev. Hillard Howard officiated at the services, with burial being in the Rockton cemetery. The Masonic lodge conducted rites at the church.
Victor was born September 18, 1925, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Ellis. He moved to Rockton when 8 years old and attended Rockton grade school and Hononegah high school. In 1943 he went to work at the Beloit Daily News and a few years ago transferred to the Ruppert-Dreher Typestting company in Rockford.
He became actively interested in auto racing 12 years ago. He built his own midget racer and became a widely known driver in the midwest. Later he moved up to the larger race cars, similar to the one he was driving in Friday night's fatal accident.
In 1952 and 1953 he won the Wisconsin state midget championship and later established international records at the Minnesota state fair and at Cedar Rapids.
Victor was married to Irene Williams and they resided in Rockton since that time. Their son, James, was born six months ago.
Surviving in addition to his wife and son, are his mother, Mrs. Hattie Roberts; two brothers, Warren and Russell; a sister, Mrs. Forrest Beck. His father died a few years ago.
