JANE LOUISE BYRNE Jane Sophia Louisa was born in Laclede, Missouri on September 3, 1915 and was the oldest child of Wayne and Edna Anderson. Louise, as she was known to her family and friends, attended Laclede High School where she played on the women's basketball team and graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1933. The next major milestone in her life was her marriage to Robert Fifield Byrne, which was described in the local newspaper as, "two of Laclede's best known and most popular young people were united in marriage at the Methodist Parsonage last Saturday evening, October 4, 1941."
With the onset of World War II, her husband was inducted into the Army where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge in 1945, and during that time Louise worked at Henderson Produce Company in Laclede. Following the war, they opened Byrne Feed and Produce in Linneus, Missouri. In 1950, their only child Susan was born. In 1952, the decision was made to sell their business in Missouri and move to California, where her husband held administrative positions with Alber's Milling Company, a division of Carnation Company, in Reedley, Redlands, Beaumont, and Santa Rosa. During this time, Louise enjoyed being a mother and housewife. In 1960, the family moved back to Beaumont. When her husband unexpectedly passed away in 1964, Louise began working full-time as a bookkeeper at Alber's Milling Company in Beaumont. In 1975, Louise joined the Soroptimist International of Beaumont and eventually became a Life Member. Louise was a Grain Buyer at Alber's Milling Company at the time of her retirement. After retirement, Louise began her second career as a dedicated and loyal volunteer. For 20 years she served as the Office Receptionist for the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce and was twice honored as the "Chamber Volunteer of the Year." She was also a member of the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she put in numerous volunteer hours. In addition, Louise was a member of the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and served as its President during 1986-87. In 1997, Louise received the Soroptimist's "Women of Distinction" Award for her many volunteer activities and accomplishments; and at the 1999 Cherry Festival Parade, Louise was honored as one of the Cherry Festival Association's "Honored Citizens" for her years of dedicated service to the community of Beaumont. Louise also enjoyed her many friends at the Beaumont/Banning Elks, and she was a life-long member of the Grand Chapter of Missouri, Order of the Eastern Star. During the last four years of her life, Louise resided in Riverside, California, where she passed away on January 5, 2011. Louise is survived by her sister Martha Head of Pacific Beach, California; her daughter Susan (John) Atkinson of Riverside, California; two grandchildren, Justin Atkinson and Erin Nelson; and five great grandchildren, Emily Nelson, Caitlyn Nelson, Angela Atkinson, Sarah Atkinson, and Robert Atkinson. She will be dearly missed by all. A "Celebration of Her Life" will be held at Weaver Mortuary, 1177 Beaumont Avenue in Beaumont, California on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations to honor Louise should be directed to the San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Foundation, 600 North Highland Springs Avenue, Banning, California 92220.
