Religious Leader, Social Reformer, Catholic Priest. Father Kolasinski was the founding pastor of the Sweetest Heart of Mary Catholic Church, that had an original congregation size of approximately 4,000 Polish Americans. The impact that he had not only on the Sweetest Heart of Mary Church but on all of Detroit and it's large Polish community at the time (post Civil War) is difficult to summarize. He is responsible not only for the founding of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church, but also for building St. Albertus Church-the Polish Mother Church, a school for St. Casimir Church, a church in Toledo, Ohio, and a church in North Dakota. There have been several books written about him, including Lawrence D. Orton's book, "Polish Detroit and the Kolasinski Affair", and the controversies that followed him wherever he went. It's difficult to learn his history without understanding the politics, scandals, riots, devotion, and commitment that made him and the Church he was devoted to. At one point he and his followers were excommunicated due to Church politics. He is interred in the Kolasinski Mausoleum in the Sacred Heart of Saint Mary Cemetery, the cemetery of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church; land he purchased and consecrated himself. The cemetery was originally known as Greenwood Cemetery. The mausoleum is located in the oldest section of the cemetery (north end) and faces north. The inscription reads: HERE RESTS~REV. DOMINICK H. KOLASINSKI~FOUNDER AND PASTOR OF THE SACRED HEART OF MARY'S CHURCH IN DETROIT~BORN IN GALICIA AUGUST 3, A.D. 1836~DIED APRIL 11TH, 1898. It is carved in English on the right of the door, and Polish on the left of the door. The inscription centered over the door is in Latin.
